Despite being an entirely preventable and curable disease, tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from an infectious disease globally. TB rates in the UK are on the rise, reversing decades of progress and threatening the UK’s status as a World Health Organisation (WHO) low-incidence TB country.
TB disproportionately affects marginalised communities; the social determinants of health such as poverty, undernutrition, poor immune systems, overcrowded living conditions, lack of access to water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, and inadequate access to quality healthcare all play a part in allowing the disease to thrive.
Addressing the factors that make people vulnerable to developing TB is the first step in preventing
this deadly disease.
At the moment, responsibility for TB services is fragmented between NHS England, UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and local authorities, with no single nationally accountable body or strategic plan to drive coordinated action. The lack of a national and fully funded TB strategy has led to uneven service provision, underfunded local responses, gaps in prevention, outreach, and long-term support – particularly in high-incidence areas.
Consequently, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Global Tuberculosis is launching an inquiry that seeks to explore how a cohesive, adequately funded, and equity-driven TB strategy can help England - and in turn, the UK, - reverse the rise in TB cases and prevent future transmission.
We want to hear from you. Whether you have lived experience of TB, work in healthcare, research, local government, community support, or simply have ideas or evidence to share – your voice matters and can help shape the recommendations of the Inquiry.
Please read the inquiry details before submitting evidence:
We will be accepting written and video submissions until 5pm on Friday 19th September.
Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Individuals and organisations may be invited to expand on their evidence through oral evidence sessions, which will take place in person and hybrid in October.
